Native to Central Africa, the art of bata drums playing nowadays is mostly kept up in Cuba, by descendants of African slaves. They divide into: - the Okonkolo ("the son"), the smallest and hihest in pitch - the Itotele ("the father" or "the king"), a mid-size drum that plays medium-pitched parts - the Iya ("the mother"), which is the largest and lowest in pitch. These are three sacred drums; the drummers play them to communicate with "Orishas", i.e. divinities of African origin. Their handmaking follows precise, traditionnal rules and rituals. With their distinctive shape (sand timer) and two, different-size heads give them wide sound possibilities. The three drums interwoven rhythms are accompanied by Yoruba-language chanting.
Our three-drum set is hand made, cut in the mass (red cedar) with wood and upperworks imported from Cuba, by experienced craftsmen.
