Log drums (or Krins, slit drums...) are directly-struck idiophones. Instruments of this kind, based on the same vibrating, hollow body principle, have been created in various parts of the world: Africa, Malaysia, Aztec America, the Philippines, Polynesia... It seems each civilization has its own version of the slit drum.
Depending on the period and region, they differ in size, shape and cultural function. Aztecs used them to accompany dances and spoken poetry in religious rituals whereas in other regions, they were used as a long-distance, communication means. In ancient civilizations, they were often considered to have magical powers.
This Big Bom is a large log drum, designed by Schlagwerk, with warm, soft tones. Its tuning follows a pentatonic scale. This very large instrument allows two musicians to play together, side by side or facing each other, and create some kind of musical dialogue. Big boms have proved themselves to be useful tools in musicotherapy.
This model is tuned in F, with a particularly low-pitched, deep range.
