Darbuka is a goblet-shaped hand membraphone, with a single skin and a short, dry, piercing sound. Traditionally made of clay, its goat- or fish skin head is often glued to the shell rim. Its is tuned with heat (from a fire or by hand friction). Nowadays, darbukas are often made of cast iron, aluminium or ceramic and its head (natural or sunthetic) is fixed between the shell and a thick rim with screws that serve to adjust the head tension and tune the instrument.
This darbuka is a soloist model, entirely covered with inlaid wood work on the outside and with a layer of white resin on the inside. It is made in , with a transparent plastic head. A professional instrument, this model is aimed at purists.
NB: this darbuka is delivered with a thick, reinforced, Djoliba cover (see North African & Middle East accessories), a spare head and a lifetime guaranteed tension spanner. The decoration motifs are different on each model, so do not expect an ordered model to be identical to our photo.
