This pack includes a metal dayan (low-pitched drum) and a sheesham-wood bayan (high-pitched drum)

The skins of both drums (upper heads) are covered with smaller, inner patches called syahi which were originally temporary, made from a mix of starch (rice or wheat) and black mineral powder. Nowadays, it’s been replace by a permanent rubber patch. The precise construction and shaping of this area (especially on the smaller drum) is responsible for modification of the drum's natural overtones, resulting in the clarity of pitch and variety of tonal possibilities unique to this instrument.
